When selecting media for shot blasting machines, the following key factors must be considered:
"Material compatibility": The media material must be compatible with the workpiece being processed. Common materials include cast steel, stainless steel, and cast iron shot. For example, cast steel shot is suitable for removing oxides and scale from the surfaces of castings and forgings, while stainless steel shot is used for cleaning stainless steel, aluminum alloys, and other materials.
"Hardness selection": Media hardness significantly affects cleaning speed and service life. Higher-hardness media clean quickly but have a shorter service life and consume more energy; lower-hardness media also clean effectively but offer a longer service life. The ideal hardness range is approximately 40–50 HRC, which balances cleaning efficiency with extended media longevity.
"Density and internal defects": Media density should exceed 7.4 g/cm³ to minimize the impact of internal defects on service life. Furthermore, internal material defects—such as pores or cracks—also influence service life and consumption rates.
"Specific model selection": Choose the appropriate media type based on the material and surface requirements of the workpiece. For instance, 304 stainless steel shot is suitable for stainless steel workpieces, whereas 201 stainless steel shot is suitable for aluminum alloy workpieces.
